Who said language studies shouldn't be fun? Riddle in Spanish is «adivinanza». Riddles are challenging enough in English. Take a riddle and put it into Spanish and it's even harder. But trust me, you can do it!

Trying to figure out riddles in Spanish is a great way to exercise and improve your language skills, learn some vocabulary and get used to thinking in Spanish.

Tip: You have to think outside the box, read between the lines and go past the literal meaning of the riddle. There are some Spanish riddles that have the answer embedded in the puzzle. With other riddles, you hear the sound of the answer when you say the riddle aloud.

What does a fish do?

Nada = Nothing = It swims.

Explanation: Nada means «nothing» however, it's also one of the conjugations for the verb nadar which means «to swim».

What does the sea say to the beach?

Ola!

Explanation: Ola (wave) naturally sounds a lot like ¡Hola! (Hello!) since the «h» isn't pronounced in Spanish.

Explanation: Salsa means «sauce», however, it's also the most popular of all the Latin dances.

I have something in my hand. It isn't gold. It isn't silver. What is it?

El plátano = A banana.

Explanation: In Spanish, there are a lot of words that look alike and sound alike but have completely different meanings. The answer is literally written in the riddle. When you combine the words «plata» and «no» you get to «plátano».

What is the only plant that bears neither flower, fruit nor leaves?

La planta del pie = Sole of the foot.

El ajo = A garlic.

Explanation: In Spanish, dientes de ajo, literally «garlic teeth», is the way to say «cloves of garlic».

El camaleón = A chameleon.

Explanation: The riddle uses the words «cama» and «león» which are the two words found embedded within camaleón.

Las horas del reloj = The hours of the clock.

Explanation: Half an hour in Spanish is «media hora». The plural form is «medias horas». But «medias» also means «socks».

El gato = A cat.

Explanation: Arañar is a verb that means to scratch. So, el gato araña means the cat scratches. But the same word «araña» also means spider in Spanish.
